I have a BA in English Literature from Leeds Beckett University and an MA in Global Literature and Culture from the University of York. I am studying for a doctorate in English with Creative Writing at the latter institute. My project, which the York Graduate Research School funds, will result in poetic reflections on walking the Pennine Way trail. One primary research aim is to connect the travel writing genre with postcolonial and disability studies.
I have a background in widening access and in charity work. I am a staff member in the Access and Outreach department at York University. I support people from underrepresented groups and develop the university’s culture to promote their progression to higher education. I have developed cultural awareness training and partnered with community groups within and beyond the city. I am passionate about raising the aspirations of people from minority groups and understand that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. I want to contribute to YCEDE and connect my work to widen access to my research interests and academia.
