YCEDE Mentoring programme
The YCEDE PGR Mentoring programme has been created in consultation and collaboration with staff and PGRs from across the consortium to provide a bespoke mentoring programme for UK Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic PGRs. This is a 6-month, bi-annual, one-to-one mentoring programme, which pairs a PGR with a member of staff, either at their own institution or from a partnered university. The purpose of this programme is to provide PGRs with a trained mentor with whom they are able to have supportive, non-judgemental conversations about their experiences of postgraduate research and their professional and career development. The YCEDE PGR Mentoring programme is part of a wider programme of opportunities and support that students can access.
How it works
- Available to ethnically minoritized, UK domiciled graduates considering studying a PhD
- You must be enrolled in any year of a doctoral research programme.
- Be able to commit to six, approximately one-hour, mentoring meetings over 6-months (May–October 2025). Held online or in person.
- Attend both an Induction Workshop and a YCEDE EDI Workshop.
- Provide feedback on the programme.
- Once registered and undergone induction and EDI training, you are matched with a mentor from one of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford or Sheffield Hallam from a subject area relevant to your interest.
- You are introduced to your mentor via email by a member of the YCEDE team.
Our mentors
- YCEDE mentors are research staff; postdocs, research fellows.
- Academic staff
- Professional service staff who hold a PhD and have lived experience, research experience or awareness of the cultural context of underrepresented groups in higher education.
Why take part?
- 1:1 mentoring offers PGRs trained mentors with whom they are able to have supportive, non-judgemental conversations about their experiences of postgraduate research and their professional and career development.
- You will have the opportunity to listen and learn from the mentors experience, and this may help you in making an informed choice about your next steps in your PGR journey.

*We use the term Black, Asian or ethnically minoritised student respectfully, although we know there are issues with this term. We recognise the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the cultural and ethnic identity of people within what is defined as Black, Asian and ethnically minoritised.
