Exploring the barriers to education faced by Black postgraduate students in higher education in England

I am a full-time second-year PhD researcher in Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds. Holding an LLB, LLM, and PGCE, my diverse academic background in law and teaching informs my research into the structural barriers faced by Black postgraduate students in England, and the impact this has on educational experience and academic outcomes. Through my research, I hope to deepen understanding and develop strategies for greater inclusivity.
My experience across academia and educational engagement aligns strongly with YCEDE’s mission to advance equitable access and inclusivity in education. I have led initiatives to support racially minoritised students, focusing on building networks and advocating for more inclusive academic spaces. I have also engaged in mentoring students, which enables me to support students’ academic, professional, and personal development, helping them to navigate university life with confidence. Drawing on my background in law, teaching, and EDI research, I bring a well-rounded perspective to the YCEDE Scholars Board, committed to driving meaningful change and supporting inclusive learning environments.
