Exploring trust in digital news media among young, underserved audiences in an age of generative artificial intelligence

I am a third-year PhD candidate at University of Sheffield. I studied Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick and did a master’s degree in Information Science at UCL. I then worked at various information and research management roles in libraries and universities in London. I was inspired to pursue a doctoral research opportunity through working closely with researchers and academics.  My project is supported by BBC Research and Development Responsible Innovation Centre and aims to address the challenge of digital inequality and inclusion in a data-driven world. It investigates how the increasing use of content created with artificial intelligence might affect the trust relationship between young adults who experienced inequality and public service media such as the BBC.
As a PGR of colour, I believe the challenges we face when working in academia are still not recognised by decision makers in universities. In the 23/24 academic year I was PGR Representative for Social Sciences at the Student’s Union Council and attended University of Sheffield PGR Committee meetings. I was surprised to see how the PGR voice is missing in these important conversations held by management. I am keen that current and future PGRs with similar lived experiences are enabled to excel in their career by ensuring we are represented in such spaces. Being in the YCEDE Scholar’s Board is an unique opportunity to do so and support academic outcomes for PGRs of colour.
