YCEDE’s Raj Mann awarded the Phoenix Award at the Inclusive Impact Awards 2025

We are incredibly proud to share that YCEDE’s very own Raj Mann has been awarded The Phoenix Award at the Inclusive Impact Awards 2025!

This award honours individuals who ‘Rise Through Unprecedented Times’ – those who demonstrate extraordinary care, adaptation, and strength in protecting community wellbeing during challenging times.

The award recognised Raj’s outstanding contribution to EDI and wellbeing, and the meaningful impact she has had across her community. During her time at the University of York and at YCEDE, she has supported colleagues and students through a wide range of personal and professional challenges, all while dedicating her time to development, mentoring and nurturing a genuine sense of belonging. Raj’s ability to help others feel seen, valued and supported is exactly why she is so deserving of this recognition – something clearly reflected in the many heartfelt testimonials shared about her work.

“Raj actively helps others see opportunity when challenges fell overwhelming. Within YCEDE. she championed Black and Asian-led partner organisations, personally ensuring they were recognised financially, with respect and dignity, and provided with legacy opportunities. She consistently translates barriers into achievable actions, opening doors for participation, development, and lasting impact. Her influence inspires hope, motivates engagement, and sustains progress for individuals that experience exclusion, and the wider community…”

I can think of no one more deserving of the Phoenix Award than Raj. Throughout her time at the University of York, she has been a constant source of strength, empathy and advocacy for students of ethnic minorities. Her ability to recognise when someone is struggling, and to offer not just practical help but genuine human understanding, has had a lasting impact on me.

“When I think of Raj, words often fail me. Over the years, she has been more than a colleague – she has been a mentor, a role model and, in countless ways, a lifeline. As a South Asian Muslim PhD researcher navigating the sometimes overwhelming and isolating landscape of academia, I have often felt unseen, hesitant to speak up, or unsure if my voice mattered. During those moments, Raj became a source of unwavering support, creating a space where I could be honest, vulnerable, and fully heard…”

Huge congratulations to Raj from everyone at YCEDE! And thank you for everything you bring to our community and the wider sector. Your compassion, advocacy and dedication inspire us all!

Raj received the award from Charlie Jeffery, Vice Chancellor, University of York and Professor Kiran Trehan, Pro Vice Chancellor for Enterprise, Partnerships and Engagements, University of York.
