Sheffield Hallam is committed to addressing barriers to higher education for under-represented groups. To help address underrepresentation in our postgraduate research student community, we are offering the below scholarship.

Applications are invited from UK Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates for a Race Equity Graduate Teaching Assistantship PhD Scholarship in the College of Social Science and Arts (SSA) in the following areas (i) Law & Justice; (ii) Sheffield Institute of Education; (iii) Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (iv) Institute of Social Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Geography, Environment and Planning) (iv) Sheffield Creative Industries Institute (Fine Art & Design, Communication, Media & Film Studies, History, English, Architecture), commencing 3 February 2024.

Research in SSA is interdisciplinary and examines economies, social and cultural institutions and practices, human cultures, behaviours and public policies. PhD Study in the College of Social Science and Arts

You will join a collaborative, thriving and inclusive doctoral research environment that fosters capability and ambitious doctoral research activity. We are committed to developing motivated social science and arts and humanities research leaders who are dedicated to making positive cultural or societal impacts. Our study environment provides opportunities to develop your research skills through engagement in events, conferences, and training.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

An overview of the GTA scholarship scheme can be found here: GTA scholarships overview of the scheme. GTAs undertake agreed training and professional development in teaching activities in addition to working towards a PhD qualification.

Funding

We are offering one GTA PhD scholarship for candidates who have UK (Home) tuition fee status and identify as being from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background. Scholarships are available for 3.5 years (full-time) or 6 years (part-time) and include:

  • Tuition fees
  • Maintenance bursary at the standard SHU PhD stipend rate aligned with the net real living wage. In the academic year 2024/25, it is £20,116 per annum for full-time study, and part-time is paid at 50%
