On Friday 17th November, University of York staff from across Equity & Diversity, Access & Outreach, and YCEDE Teams attended the 2023 Yorkshire Asian Young Achievers Awards in Bradford, where we were delighted to celebrate some of the outstanding achievements of YCEDE scholars and York students:
Huge congratulations to YGRS PhD scholarship holder Mohammad Malik, who won the award for Achievement in Education! Mohammad is a second year York PhD student in the Politics department, and alongside this he has done some truly incredible work organising trips to Calais refugee camps, helping Afghan refugees integrate in York, mentoring prospective HE students, and running anti-racism workshops on campus. He is an amazing community leader and researcher.
YCEDE scholar, Zenab Sabahat, received ‘highly commended’ in the category of Achievement in Mental Health or Healthcare. Representing one third of what was arguably the most tightly-contested category of the evening, Zenab is a PhD researcher at Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust. Her inspiring research attempts to tackle structural inequalities for ethnically minoritised British communities and cultivate a stronger sense of inclusion. We are so proud to have such an inspiring YCEDE Scholars Board as part of the team.
Finally, we were also delighted to see York Sport Union President, Tanisha Jain, win the award for Achievement in Sport, and YUSU Activities Officer Rohan Ashar receive ‘highly commended’ in the category of Achievement in the Not-for-Profit Sector. Tanisha’s story and her commitment to sport are a testament to the importance of not giving up on your passions, while Rohan has helped over 10,000 students to join a volunteering project to encourage them to look beyond academic life. Congratulations to everyone!
